If you’ve decided to travel to Mallorca for your next holiday, you can be sure of being in good company. The Balearic Islands have a reputation for being a retreat for myriad Hollywood superstars – and even count a select group of cultural influencers whom you might not expect. Agatha Christie, a lady who needs no introduction, was among its earliest visitors – in the 1930s, she resided in Puerto Pollenca and wrote Problems at Pollensa Bay’ from Hotel Illa d’Or while sipping on cocktails (or so we like to think). Other famous people to frequent Mallorca during this time include the likes of Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin and Grace Kelly. If you’re looking for more recent names to watch out for while you’re here, try Harrison Ford, Michael Palin, Stephen Fry, Kate Moss, Sting, Pierce Brosnan, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jamie Oliver. In addition, you’ve a got chance of spotting musical mogul Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, who loves the island so much he purchased a house in Deia.
So what is it that makes Mallorca appealing to such a wide range of people? Simply the fact that it has got absolutely everything you could ever wish for on a holiday. Fine beaches, natural beauty and the facilities required to cater for a wide range of people. If you’re seeking a buzzing atmosphere, Mallorca can certainly accommodate. Equally, it has its quiet parts. If all this has got you excited, you can get started booking your holiday at this link here. Perhaps not an A-lister today (he’s dead), but during his time on the planet, Mr Chopin left quite an impact. A name that all classical music students will be familiar with, the musical genius led a turbulent life and career that inspired a whirlwind journey throughout the world. He perhaps spoke most fondly, though, of our Balearic Island. A letter to his friend Julio Fontana in 1838 read as thus:
“I’m in Palma, between Palma trees, cedar, aloe, orange, lemon, fig and pomegranate trees. The sky is turquoise, the sea blue, the mountains emerald, and the air? The air is as blue as the sky. The sun shines all day and people are dressed as in the summertime, because here it is hot.”
World-famous tennis star Rafael Nadal has a fascinating relationship with the Balearics, having spent his early life training in Mallorca. He even turned down the opportunity to attend the highly regarded tennis school in Barcelona to train in his home environment. In spite of the immense pressures placed upon him, he returns whenever he can to visit family and soak up the island’s fabulous atmosphere. His house can be found in Porto Cristo on the east coast.
Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas
Hollywood couple Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas are known for frequenting Mallorca, with the pair initially courting on the island. He, an actor and producer, she a star of the stage and screen. Today, they own a house near Port Valldemossa, although it is not yet known what will happen to it in the wake of their separation. Perhaps you might find yourself looking for a holiday home if you should fall in love with the island as they did?
