When looking at the latest PlayStation and Xbox, PS4 and Xbox One, both have been improved significantly and have both sold in the region of 100 million units. Both of these consoles have had a serious graphics overhaul with improved memory capacity, better controllers and access to applications such as Amazon Prime and Netflix.
Xbox One has an interface which looks very much like a Windows 8 operating system and gamers can work their way around using their controller as well as voice commands. Gamers will also be able to open apps on the screen while playing a game, whether it be a FPS, a basketball game or any other option. PS4 has a menu system which allows gamers to choose games, look at their profile and connect with their social media accounts. PS4 has a new feature that allows gamers to record their gameplay and then share it online. Xbox also has this feature but it is only made available to Xbox Live gold subscribers.
Xbox One gamers will not be able to play games older than Xbox 360, but Microsoft has said that it may be possible to play older versions if the Xbox 360 is rigged through an Xbox One by means of a HDMI cable and then be able to play older games. PS4 gamers will also not be able to play older games but Sony has said they may offer gamers cloud-based emulation for PS3 games and older versions.
When it comes to controllers the PS4 DualShock has a clickable touchpad, DVR share button, built-in speaker and headphone jack, rechargeable battery and a camera interface which senses the gamer’s environment. The DualShock connects via Bluetooth 2.1. The Xbox One controller looks the same is the older Xbox controller but has upgrades such as an added menu and view button and the controller can be charged by means of a USB cable. Xbox released a wireless controller in 2015 and has swappable parts which allow gamers to customise their controller. New features include 4 bumper pads, hair-trigger locks and a textured rolling pad.
The PS4 has a removable hard drive which allows gamers to upgrade the 500GB hard drive. Xbox One has a 500GB hard drive which has two USB ports which allows for extra external storage space. Xbox One also has a 1TB version at an extra cost which may work better for gamers who need more space. In March this year Sony came out with an update for PS4 consoles which allows gamers to update VR headsets making it possible to watch 3D Blu-ray movies, and will also allow for external hard drives with a capacity of 8TB. The drive is connected via USB to the console and gamers can install their games directly onto the external drive rather than the PS4 drive. Xbox does not make allowance for external hard drives, and much like the rules of Blackjack, this seems to be something that won’t change in the near future.
Sony will make the motion-sensing PS4 Eye separately while the Xbox Kinect camera is included. The Kinect is a feature that allows gamers to control their Xbox One console by way of biometric scanning and the Kinect is able to recognise different players by their voices.
Sony and Microsoft have both created consoles which have done well in the world of gaming. Each console has both strengths and weaknesses and gamers will have to decide which console best fits their gaming needs.
